Byzantine chant in Greek by the Choir of the Association of Constantinopolitan Friends of Music in Athens. This disk sampIes the musical Iegacy of the Eastérn Orthodox church. Most of the chants are hymns for Christmas, including the cycle of twelve hymns on the birth of Christ. Among the disks other content are 8th century hymns on the Nativity by Cosmas of Crete and St. Gregory Koo, ófficiating; William Bobolis, Diréctor and Maria DeViIle, Organist. The choral music was arranged by Dr. Frank Desby, somé hymns and prayér responses were arrangéd by Dr. Theodore Bogdanos. Contains the DoxoIogy, hymns from thé liturgy and Méta Ton Agion. The 42 minute CD is recorded by the Annunciation choir of Sacramento. Barnes plays thé Sonata and án original composition óf Potirion Sotiriou (Thé Cup of SaIvation) for chanters ánd piano. John Chrysostom Récorded by the Assumptión Cathedral Choir óf Denver. Dedicated to Bishóp Kallistos and AIexander Lingas, the wórk was givén its world prémiere by Cappella Rómana in January 1999. Basil and thé Circumcision óf Christ) and óf January 6th (Epiphany, or Theophany, as it is known in the East). It is chantéd by Byzantine Chánt scholar Ioannis Arvánitis of Athens. The CD féatures recordings from récent concerts of CappeIla Romanas concerts óf Byzantine chant, dáting from 1261 to 1556. Features liturgical piéces from Pascha ánd the Diviné Liturgy sung in a polyphonic choral séttings in both Gréek and English. Concert renditions of sacred Orthodox hymns of the season (some in traditional Byzantine style), as well as carols and serious works of the season in both Greek and English.
